Two of the biggest psychological traps into which people fall when they are without work for extended periods are that they are socializing far less and that they feel as though they are not providing value to anyone. Volunteering makes it possible for people to provide value and retain the feeling that comes with a job well done. This “job” can take many forms, from simply bringing smiles to the elderly by volunteering in a nursing home to bringing value to a company by offering services for free as a means to keep them sharp. Beyond the important psychological benefits that come from feeling valuable, this also provides a great way to meet more people, demonstrate skills, and find out about new opportunities.
