The War on Drugs

What the Right believes: Drugs are scourge on this country, heavy-handed action is required to keep the problem at bay. Tough laws and tough sentences are the best way to deal with this problem.

The Truth is: Not only have tough laws and sentences failed to curb drug use, they have created a huge problem in our society. We are removing parents from their homes to imprison them for nonviolent offenses. The total cost of the war on drugs can’t be calculated in only the dollars spent on enforcement and imprisonment, it must also include the economic activity which will not happen when we take individuals from their lives and lock them up. The increase in welfare costs for the broken family and loss of revenue from taxation of the labor which will now not occur, must be factored in. When these individuals are released from prison, it is hard for them to find jobs, leading many to turn to welfare or even crime. America now imprisons more people than any other country in the world. Drug use is not down and the economic cost to our society is increasing exponentially. The War on Drugs may be the single costliest initiative ever undertaken by this government, and it has all been a waste.
