10 Right Wing Economic Misconceptions
Private Prisons
What the Right believe: Public-private partnerships always produce better value and more efficient services because the private sector understands business better.
The Truth is: While public-private partnerships may produce better trash removal programs, they are not the end-all fix for government problems. Private prisons for example, long lauded by the Right as money savers that don’t coddle criminals, are not only questionable in their regard for human rights, but have a direct profit motive to keep as many Americans locked up for as long as possible. Many public-private partnerships can achieve efficiency and provide value to taxpayers, but in some cases the government is just outsourcing its dirty work.
