Thomas Sowell (1930)

The current senior fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institute, Thomas Sowell was born in Gastonia, North Carolina, and grew up in Harlem, New York. After dropping out of high school and serving in the Marines during the Korean War, Sowell received degrees from Harvard, Columbia, and the University of Chicago. Decades on the faculties of some of America’s most prestigious school’s give him a credibility matched by few others in the field. His noteworthy works include The Economics of Policy and Race (1983), Affirmative Action Around the World (2004), and a wonderful refutation of Karl Marx in Marxism: Philosophy and Economics (1985). He is a truly insightful man who offers a unique and authoritative view on many of the most controversial subjects of our day.

All of these men spent their lives attempting to help others understand complex theories, advocating free markets, and championing Liberty. They may have chosen a field most often described as boring or dry, but each has helped millions to see that boring should never be confused with unimportant.
