10. Social Security IT project wastes several hundred million dollars
The Social Security Administration’s (SSA) project to update their system for tracking disability claims is two years from completion.That’s what SSA said 6 years ago in 2008. What is their update on the project?
In 2014, SSA’s plan to update their system was still two to two-and-a-half years away from completion, and that’s after spending almost $300 million.
The program was supposed to streamline and track various disability claims while simultaneously lowering administrative costs and enhancing quality. Instead, it is adding to the nation’s ever increasing debt and plaguing the already strained disability program, which is set to run out of money in 2016.
An analysis revealed that nearly $300 million has been wasted on this project that is permanently being tested to no avail.
