9. He Has Tried to Revive the Evil Empire
Putin considers himself a modern-day Czar, and he’s intent on reassembling the territories that were historically part of the Russian Empire. His revanchist dream is to make Russia a global superpower with a complete domination of its periphery.
Putin and his cronies believe that Russia is only safe with a ring of buffer states around it. Coupled with the large Russian-speaking minorities in these surrounding countries, it’s easy to see the recipe for ongoing conflict.
Putin won’t be happy until most of these counties are driven into full submission to Moscow and become vassal states. The Obama Administration seems unable to come to grips with this history, thus the president’s carefree attitude to the resurgent Russian military might and aggressive anti-Western rhetoric. Until the current administration in the White House learns the lessons of Russia’s wars in its near abroad, especially the invasion of Georgia in 2008 and Ukraine in 2014, it will never understand the ongoing conflict — and the government’s policy responses will continue to fail.
