10 Right Wing Economic Misconceptions
Medicare
What the Right believes: The Right believes that it is only the Left that advocates government control of health care.
The Truth is: The Right has also championed Medicare as part of their commitment to senior citizens. Again, they chose not to see the contradiction in praising free market health care while supporting a program that has help to remove competition in pricing from the market. Medicare has had an effect on all insurance providers, as it has been a major factor in the development of a third-party payer system for health care. This system separates cost from the consumer and adds additional billing costs, as specialists are needed to deal with government guidelines. As the non-partisan think tank The CATO Institute reports, it is a major reason why health care is so expensive. While the Right lambasted Obama’s Affordable Care Act, they barely batted an eye when Bush expanded Medicare. If Medicare part D had been enacted under Obama, the Right would have cried socialism.
