6. NASA spent $15,000 to help find the lost tomb of Genghis Khan

With NASA’s manned space missions grounded indefinitely, the agency is now searching for signs of ancient civilizations right here on Earth.

The space agency sponsored a $15,000 challenge to locate the lost tomb of Genghis Khan, the Mongol leader “responsible for conquering more territory than any individual in history.”

According to legend, Genghis Khan died in 1227 and his final resting place was kept a secret. His tomb is most likely on or around a Mongolian mountain called Burkhan, but to this day its precise location is unknown.

The NASA Tournament Lab at Harvard University, which received $1,761,065 from the Space Agency in 2014, offered the $15,000 prize to help find the tomb.
