10 Must-Read Books on Liberty
The Road to Serfdom by Friedrich von Hayek
Written in the early 1940’s, The Road to Serfdom is must read for anyone who is interested in how free societies become totalitarian. Hayek, an Austrian economists and philosopher, left his home to live in Britain during the rise of National Socialism. Hayek set out to explain how a once great nation like Germany had willfully transformed itself into a nation of autocrats and serfs. Hayek examines what makes people embrace authoritarianism. The root cause, according to Hayek, is government control of economic processes. He sought to warn against the “danger of tyranny that inevitably results from government control of economic decision-making through central planning.”
