Liberty, State, and Union: The Political Theory of Thomas Jefferson by Luigi Marco Bassani

Thomas Jefferson is one of the most predominant thinkers in American history. His influence on the nation, from its founding principles to its very structure, is unquestionable. But many contemporary critics have labelled the man an enigma or a riddle, claiming he was full of contradictions; implying his political philosophy may not be worthy of the sacred place America has given it. Bassani debunks that argument, lying out the Jeffersonian philosophy in three priorities listed in order of their importance: liberty, state, and union. Individual liberty was the primary concern, followed by the rights of the states, and finally the union of the states. Bassani proves that framed in this light many of his critics so called paradoxes and contradictions fall apart.
