The political paradigm is already shifting. Like it, love it, or hate it, the GOP is becoming a libertarian party. Which means the Democratic party, being its opposition, will continue to transform into a more progressive, big government party. The shift will leave big government Republicans like Karl Rove feeling more at home with Democrats like Hillary Clinton and civil libertarian Democrats like Bill Maher more at home in the GOP.
