In Rhode Island, there is the case of Michael Stevens, a Lieutenant and twelve year veteran with the Central Coventry Fire Department. Lt. Stevens hurt his knee jumping off of a fire truck. The injury required the lieutenant to spend the next 12 months on disability drawing his full salary. At the end of that year, Lieutenant Stevens filed for a permanent disability pension. While recuperating from his injury, the lieutenant participated in numerous bicycle marathons that he was proud to share on his Facebook account. When asked about this apparent fraud, lieutenant Stevens points out that “…bicycling is not firefighting.” Stevens is exemplary of many, unfortunately, who try to soak taxpayers for fraudulent pensions.
