3. Negotiate (almost) everything

This is not common practice in the United States, but in most other countries, prices on things like souvenirs, transportation, and even accommodation are usually open to negotiation. Especially at markets and other places in which those selling are mostly individuals rather than chain businesses, the initial price given is nothing more than a starting point for discussion. Most Americans choose to buy or pass on things based on the quoted price, which is a very big mistake. It’s not uncommon for the initial price to drop by half or more, especially if you show that you are willing to walk away. In some cases, this can be very frustrating for those who are used to set prices. With the right attitude, haggling can be one of the most enjoyable parts of the travel experience.
