France has been criticizing US foreign policy at least since General Charles de Gaulle’s presidency. The inability to tolerate the Anglo-Saxon US/UK leadership of NATO even caused France to withdraw from this defense organization in the 1960s, partly to appease the Soviets.
In recent times, France was especially critical of the war in Iraq and adamant that the invasion of this Middle Eastern country was a sign of American imperialism and colonialism.
However, if we look at France’s international record, we can see that its foreign policy is not any less, if not more, imperialistic than that of the US. France treats all of Francophone Africa as its zone of influence. It has sent its troops to topple or support various African dictators numerous times. France has no room to accuse America of imperialism when its major precept in foreign policy is the support of French language, culture, and values in its former colonies and around the world.
