4. Qatar
Qatar has been positioning itself as a defender of Muslim rights around the world, especially criticizing Western countries for the supposed discrimination toward their Muslim minorities. The Al Jazeera news channel has been promoting these kind of stories around the clock, most of them vastly exaggerated.
What Qatar doesn’t want you to know, however, is that this wealthy Middle Eastern country is one of the worst human rights abusers. It mistreats its own “guest workers,” who come mostly from the other impoverished Muslim countries in the region, and treats them as slave labor. Even the babies born to the migrant workers are not eligible for Qatari citizenship and are treated as second class. Non-Muslim workers are treated even worse. Women nurses and nannies are often abused and/or raped by their employers. Christian and other non-Muslim religious gatherings are virtually illegal, and Jewish people, especially with ties to Israel, are forbidden to set foot in this authoritarian emirate.
