Ludwig von Mises (1881-1973)

Born in what is now Ukraine to Jewish parents, Ludwig Von Mises would become one the world’s most strident opponents of collectivism. Coming from a family that had been elevated to Austro-Hungarian nobility in the 19th century, and having served as a front line artillery officer in World War I, he spent the rest of his life advocating markets free of government interference. His second book, Nation, State and Economy (1919), actually warned against the paths and policies that lead directly to the Second World War and highlights his burgeoning fight against socialism. Hindsight offers us the benefit of seeing how correct he was about many things, even if he was not fully appreciated by his contemporaries. A man who could have risen to even greater heights had he been willing to soften his criticisms, but who never compromised.
