10 Facts about World Poverty That Will Shock You
6. Government is not the answer
While governments may play a role in providing services for those in need today, the overall role of governments in the course of economic development is one of obstruction. Too often ideological or political motives cause barriers to trade. Too often people’s rights to produce and trade to their own benefit are impeded. It is the development of business, which facilitates the creation of wealth that is the only real solution to alleviating poverty. Governments like those in Cuba and Venezuela, or to a lesser degree many European nations, who impede upon economic activities through regulation or taxation, seeking to control the economy to aid those in need, do far more harm than good. They do more for their people if they’d get out of the way.
