10. Red Herring

A debater will attempt to distract the audience from the issue at hand by raising another issue. “My policies aside, my opponent once managed a factory that closed down and people lost their jobs.” The debater is refusing to address question concerning his policies and instead focuses attention on a perceived weakness of his opponent, even though it has nothing to do with the issue at hand.
