10 Reasons to Keep Government Out of Healthcare
10. Government healthcare will destroy doctor-patient relationships
Government healthcare’s massive amount of red tape and regulations will tear apart the doctor-patient relationship. Doctors will have to focus increasingly on government rules rather than the specific needs of their patients. The Heritage Foundation warns that no class of American professionals will be more negatively impacted by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act and the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act than physicians. Third-party payment arrangements already compromise the independence and integrity of the medical profession; government-run care will reinforce the worst of these features.
Specifically, physicians will be subject to more government regulation and oversight, and will be increasingly dependent on unreliable government reimbursement for medical services. Doctors, already under tremendous pressure, will only see their jobs become more difficult.
In addition, ACA links payment for providers to adherence to government measurements of care. A recent Jackson Healthcare doctor survey found that 67 percent of doctors surveyed said the government-run healthcare would only worsen the doctor-patient relationship.
