9. Cut the Department of Transportation

Most roads are built and maintained by state and local governments. Thus, the need for the Federal Highway Administration is non-existent. By eliminating that Administration and the Federal Transit Administration we could save billions without any loss of services. Air Traffic Control should also be privatized, as Canada did which resulted in a more efficient and safer system.

10. Eliminate the Department of Energy

The Department of Energy does have some vital functions. Those functions are just a fraction of what the Department does, however. Research makes up a large part of the Department’s budget, but there is no reason why the private sector can’t handle that. The essential parts of the Department’s purview, like the storage and maintenance of nuclear weapons and environmental clean-ups, can be transferred to other agencies or departments, such as the Department of Defense or the EPA. The Department of Energy is less suited to handle these areas than the other departments, and its existence is thus unnecessary.
