2. Tax Revenue

In case you haven’t noticed, we’re kind of in an economic mess. The national debt is anywhere from $16 trillion to over $100 trillion, depending on whether one accounts for the nation’s unfunded financial obligations, and most states aren’t in any better shape. Colorado, however, the first state to sell legal weed on the open market has had a major influx of revenue. The state is projected to see over $40 million in additional revenues from marijuana sales. That means Colorado politicians will take the burn-out jokes all the way to the bank.

Washington state, infamous for its rainy weather, will be bringing sunshine and making it rain cold hard cash next year when it will become the second state to allow retail pot sales. Alaska has a good chance of becoming the third state.

Of course, a bunch of conservatives who’ve seen too many Reefer Madness movies are determined to make the federal government do something crack down on these defiant states. The Democrats likely won’t budge on Washington or Colorado, though, as doing so could alienate their voting base in both states.
