10 Federal Programs That Failed Miserably
9. The Drug Enforcement Agency
Established in 1973 by President Richard Nixon, the Drug Enforcement Agency is a federal law enforcement entity under the control of the United States Department of Justice. Tasked with enforcement of the Controlled Substances Act, the DEA is the lead federal enforcement agency for domestic drug laws in addition to pursuing drug investigations internationally. With an annual budget of $3 billion and nearly 11,000 employees, it certainly is difficult for even the most ardent supporters to claim the agency is a success when there are multiple narco-terrorist states in Central and South America and most junior high school children can direct one to any number of places to purchase illicit drugs.
