Bezos was born to a teenage mother and a Cuban immigrant father on January 12, 1964, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Bezos wrote up his business plan for Amazon in 1994, while driving across country from New York to Seattle. Starting the business from a garage, he left a lucrative career as a New York City hedge fund trader after discovering that Internet use was rapidly growing, coinciding with the fact that the Supreme Court ruling at the time held that mail order catalogs
were not required to collect sales taxes in states where they lacked physical presence.
In 2000, Bezos founded Blue Origin, a human spaceflight startup company and later purchased The Washington Post in October, 2013.
