4. You will be placed on long waitlists

Government care not only means rationing, it means bureaucracy and delays. In Massachusetts, the model state for universal coverage, one clinic has a waitlist of at least 1,600 people — about four months — for an initial appointment. As one Canadian judge wrote, “Access to a waiting list is not access to healthcare.” What good is government coverage if all it gets you is a spot on a waiting list?

The waitlists in Canada, even for some routine easy operations, are so long, many Canadians chose to come across the border, pay out of pocket, and have all the necessary procedures done in the United States, rather than wait indefinitely for their turn back home. The situation in many European countries is even worse than north of the border.
