Park and preserve protection is also well handled by markets. Privately owned Ravenna Park in Seattle, which was opened in 1887, is a striking example. The park was owned from its opening by George and Oltilde Dorffel, then acquired (as part of a 400 acre parcel) in 1889, and maintained as a popular destination by owners William and Louise Beck. The park featured nature trails, mineral springs (touted as having healthful properties), and many magnificent old-growth Douglas firs. Then, in 1911, it was bought by the city of Seattle. The city subsequently lowered the lake that fed the stream in the park and many magnificent trees were cut down by the city (or poached), and by 1972, under city management, it was rendered ugly and dangerous, a hangout for drug users. Today, it is a city park and a community group, the Ravenna Creek Alliance, is working to restore it.
