2. We Share the Same Values, Lifestyles, and Culture

“Children of a Common Mother” is a famous inscription on the Peace Arch monument situated on the US-Canada border, between Washington state and the province of British Columbia. The other side of the monument has another inscription which reads “Brethren, dwelling together in Unity.” Both of these inscriptions signify the shared ancestral and cultural bond between the two countries, and their common origin as part of the British North America.

We share more than just the world’s longest border. We share the same language, values, lifestyles, and aspirations. Our societies and economies operate in very similar ways. But we are not only connected through the same Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and French heritage. Millions of Americans and Canadians are intermarried, and have family and close friends scattered throughout both of our countries. The Americans and Canadians are virtually indistinguishable to the outside world, and it says a lot about our common culture.
