6. The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight trilogy touches on capitalist themes several times, especially in the first and third movies. In the first film, Batman Begins, we learn that the Wayne family fortune was made in the service of science and their community. Their Wayne Enterprises is said to have brought new life to a desperate city. We also learn that much of the toys Batman comes to utilize were developed by Wayne Enterprises for military use, but that the government found the items to be to expensive—a lesson in private vs public defense. Then there is Batman, who in the face of a corrupt government decides to provide private defense to the people of Gotham. In the third movie we see the opposite vision portrayed by Bain’s socialist nightmare, inciting the prisoners to seek social justice in the form of retribution and the poor to punish the rich. Wayne and his wealth are attacked as the root cause of what is wrong with society. He must stand up for himself, his city, the rule of law, and capitalism.
