5. Other People’s Money

Danny Devito plays a venture capitalist known as Larry the Liquidator, who is brought in to take over and save a mom and pop started cable and wire company. The founder rejects the cutbacks and changes Larry seeks and instead elicits the help of his wife’s daughter, a lawyer, to stop the takeover. While the owners have a sentimental attachment to their employees and the way things have been run, they fail to see the truth: their business is failing and without action they will all lose everything. Larry becomes the unlikely hero, as he seeks to take over the business, save it, and win the heart of the female lawyer, even though she and everyone sees him as a raider and a scumbag. The movie underscores the fact that the business owners are being unfair to their shareholders in their refusal to make changes in order to turn a profit. It isn’t their money they are playing sentimentality with. The movie takes the corporate bad guy narrative and turns it on its head. Larry ends up being kind of an anti-hero.
